End Of Watch: 09/23/2015            While responding to an emergency call for a male with chest pain, Chief Miller died from injuries sustained when the fire department ambulance he was a passenger in collided with a slow moving backhoe loader. The driver and one other crew member on board the ambulance were not injured. The ambulance was traveling east on Bovee Road in Riga, New York, when the accident occurred. According to media reports quoting law enforcement officials, early morning sunshine and fog were contributing factors to the fatal accident which remains under investigation by local and state authorities.

Officer Pierson gave his life for his community on 3 September 2014. He was gunned down by a parole violator who had only been released three weeks previously. Officer Pierson was an eight veteran of the RPD. He served on the Tactical unit and received numerous commendations for his work, including two Chief’s Letters.

Officer Pierson served his nation as a member of the Army National Guard. He was a veteran of the Afghanistan War.

He leaves behind a loving wife, a 4 year old son and a three month old daughter, as well as numerous family, friends, and colleagues.

Following a public funeral  service at the Rochester Blue Cross Arena on 9 September 2014,  where thousands of law enforcement and public safety personnel from around the U.S. and Canada came to pay final tribute, Officer Pierson was laid to rest in a private ceremony, attended by family and RPD personnel.

Sgt. Shaina Schmigel

SGT. SHAINA B. SCHMIGEL – Age 21, 82nd Airborne Paratrooper who died Friday evening May 30, 2014 in a training exercise at Fort Bragg, NC, will be welcomed home Monday June 9 to be laid to rest. She was born October 18, 1992 in Batavia, NY to Karie Schmigel of Medina and Kim (Debbie) Dexter of Missouri.

Shaina was a 2010 graduate of Medina High School where she was very involved in school activities including track, cheerleading and winterguard. After graduation she enlisted in the United States Army to follow her dream of being a soldier. She began as a Military Intelligence Analyst and attended basic combat training at Fort Jackson, SC followed by Advanced Individual Training at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. Upon completion of her Military Intelligence training, SGT Schmigel attended the United States Army Airborne School in May of 2011 becoming a proud member of the Airborne community.

SGT Schmigels first assignment was to Bravo Company, 2D Brigade Special Troops Battalion where she served as an Intelligence Analyst and a Signal Intelligence Analyst. She deployed to Iraq in the summer of 2011 in support of Operation New Dawn where she was instrumental in providing the Brigade Commander with real time situational awareness on the enemy during stressful combat conditions.

Upon return from Iraq SGT Schmigel was assigned to HHC, 37th Engineer Battalion, where she participated in one rotation to the Joint Readiness Training Center and several Brigade and Battalion level training exercises. SGT Schmigel had also attended the Warrior Leaders Course.

Her awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (2), Army Good Conduct Medal (2), National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with one Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and the Parachutist Badge.

She enjoyed video games, camping at Watkins Glen for the annual Nascar race, country line dancing and weekends in North Carolina were for her passion, Rodeo!

Surviving along with her parents are her sister, Sheniqua Samol of Medina; brother, Matthew Scroger of Lackawanna; half-sisters, Amanda, Kaycee & Samantha Dexter; maternal grandparents, Donald K. (Susan) Schmigel Sr. of Corfu; maternal great-grandmother, Betty Quackenbush of LA; paternal great-grandmother Nora Steele of Oakfield; uncle, Donald K. (Jennifer Zynda) Schmigel Jr. of Corfu; many dear friends along with her military family in North Carolina.

She was laid to rest with Full Military Honors in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Corfu, New York. Memorials can be made in care of Shaina’s family to be used for a future donation in her memory

Webster, N.Y.: Passed away as a result of a tragic line of duty event on December 24, 2012, age 43, along with his fellow firefighter & friend, Tomasz Kaczowka. Webster: Tomasz Marian Kaczowka, at the age of 19, passed away in the line of duty with his mentor and close friend, Lt. Michael “Chip” Chiapperini on December 24, 2012.

Tomasz was born May 16, 1993 in Rochester, NY to Janina and Marian Kaczowka. He attended Webster Thomas High School, graduating in 2011.

Sgt. Nicholas Reid

Sgt.  Nicholas Reid

Passed away on Thursday December 13, 2012 at age 26 while proudly serving his country in Afghanistan. He is survived by his parents Ken and Dorothy Reid, sister Susie Reid, several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Nick was a 2004 graduate of Brockport High School.

He enlisted in the US Army in 2006 as a Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician. Nick was on his second tour of duty to Afghanistan. He is the recipient of the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

Calling hours will be held on Friday December 28th from 12-3 pm and from 6-9 pm at the Fowler Funeral Home Inc. 340 West Ave Brockport. A funeral service with full military honors will be held Saturday December 29th at 11:30 am at The Fathers House, 715 Paul Road, Rochester NY 14642. Interment will follow. Officer Sung “Sunny” Chung

Sung “Sonny” Chung was a Gates Police Officer who retired medically in 2003 after partial recovery from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident which occurred during an emergency response. although he never returned to “active” duty Sonny continued to often visit the Gates PD headquarters and his former co-workers.

Sonny was struck down by a motor vehicle while walking near his home. He is survived by his loving wife Kara and his two sons.

Sonny was a founding member of the Gates Police Keystone Club, Police Pipes and Drums. He was a former member of the Rochester Police Department. Sonny’s great personality and many friendships will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace, Brother.

Captain Kevin Clark, U.S. Army

Captain Bruce Kevin Clark, age 43, passed away April 30th while serving in Afghanistan as a nurse.

Clark was born in Michigan, which is where he met his wife. They married in 1999, and moved to Spencerport, Orellana-Clark’s hometown, in 2000. They have two daughters, who are now ages 3 and 9.

Clark worked four years at Highland Hospital before enrolling at The College of Brockport, from which he graduated in 2006. That year, he joined the Army. He was on his first deployment, in Tarin Kowt, Uruzgan province, when he died.

SPC Christopher John Scott, a Military Policeman, age 21, of Dundee, NY was killed in action while serving our country on Saturday September 3, 2011 in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Friends and Community paid their respects to him and his family Tuesday Sept. 13 at the BAIRD FUNERAL HOME, 36 Water Street, Dundee, NY. A funeral service with Full Military Honor’s was held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 14 at the Dundee Central School Gym, 55 Water St., Dundee with Rev. Lucinda O’Leary and his cousin Pastor Gary Michael Smith officiating. Burial followed in Hillside Cemetery, Dundee.

Sgt. Devin Ariel Snyder, born 7 August 1990, died 4 June 2011 as a result of enemy action. Sgt. Snyder entered the U.S.Army on 11 August 2008. She was assigned to 787 Military Police Battalion, Fort Richardson, AK. She deployed to Afghanistan in March 2011.

She is survived by her parents, Ed & Dineen Snyder; 2 brothers, Derek (Mariah) Snyder of Cohocton & PFC Damien Snyder stationed at Fort Carson, CO. 1 sister, ABHAN (AW) Snyder stationed at Hampton, VA, her maternal grandparents, paternal grandmother, many aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was laid to rest with full military honors in Cohocton, NY. The band is proud to have escorted her on her final mission and piped for her and her family.

Scottsville: 3/12/2011 (formerly of Nova Scotia, Canada) Passed away suddenly at the age of 45. Survived by his loving wife Patricia; children, Stephanie (Nova Scotia), Paul, Patrick, Ian, Alex, Madison, Colin (at home); parents, Paul and Judy Hogue; mother and father-in-law, James and Louise Boyle; brother, Jeffrey (Leslie) Hogue; several nieces and nephews, sister and brother-in-laws (Nova Scotia) and many dear friends.

LODD: Russ Hogue passed in his sleep while working the overnight at Spencerport Ambulance. In addition to being a dedicated husband and father, Russ was President of the Scottsville Fire Corporation, a paramedic with both Rural Metro and Spencerport Ambulance, and a volunteer at Scottsville Ambulance. He committed his life to service of others. He will remain in our hearts and be deeply missed.

Sgt. Anthony “Tony” Michael Wallace-Hoonah, AK Police Department.

Sgt. Wallace and Officer Matthew Tokuoka were ambushed and killed by a lone gunman. A man the officers had arrested on several occasions in the past walked up to the officers and opened fire. Sgt. Wallace was shot first, Officer Tokuoka went to render assistance and was subsequently shot.

Served two years for the DeKalb County Police Dept. in the State of Georgia, Officer Bryant was a native of Rochester NY. Sadly, Officer Bryant was shot and killed along with his partner on 1/16/08. The burial was in Rochester New York on Monday 1/28/08.

Officer Bryant is survived by his wife and four children, he was a graduate of Gates-Chili High School & a former US Marine.

Bill was a 30 year member of the West Webster Volunteer Fire Department, where his last office was Vice-President, and a Lieutenant of Fire Police. He was a Vice-President of the onroe County Volunteer Fireman’s Association, and a Town of Webster Special Police Officer.
